How to Calculate Final Grade

Understanding how your final grade is calculated helps you plan your study strategy. Here's the math behind it:

The Formula

To find what you need on your final exam:

Final Score Needed = (Target Grade - (Current Grade × Current Weight)) × Final Weight

Example Calculation

Let's say you have an 85% in a class, want a 90% final grade, and your final is worth 25%:

In this case, you'd need 105% on the final×which means an A is out of reach without extra credit!

What If the Result Is Over 100%?

If our calculator shows you need more than 100% on your final, that target grade isn't achievable without extra credit opportunities. Consider adjusting your target or asking your professor about bonus points.

Standard Grading Scale

Letter Grade Percentage GPA Points Description
A+ 97-100% 4.0 Exceptional
A 93-96% 4.0 Excellent
A- 90-92% 3.7 Very Good
B+ 87-89% 3.3 Good
B 83-86% 3.0 Above Average
B- 80-82% 2.7 Satisfactory
C+ 77-79% 2.3 Average
C 73-76% 2.0 Fair
C- 70-72% 1.7 Below Average
D+ 67-69% 1.3 Poor
D 60-66% 1.0 Minimum Passing
F Below 60% 0.0 Failing

Note: Grading scales vary by institution. Check your syllabus for your class's specific scale.

Study Tips for Final Exams

Start Early

Begin studying at least 2 weeks before finals. Cramming is less effective than spaced repetition over time.

Use Past Exams

Practice with previous years' finals if available. Many professors reuse similar question formats.

Form Study Groups

Teaching concepts to others reinforces your own understanding. Quiz each other on key topics.

Prioritize Sleep

Your brain consolidates memories during sleep. Get 7-8 hours, especially the night before exams.

Focus on Weak Areas

Identify topics you struggled with during the semester. Allocate more study time to those areas.

Know the Format

Is it multiple choice, essays, or problems? Adjust your preparation style accordingly.

Final Exam Impact: Required Score Reference Table

Use this table to quickly estimate what score you need on your final exam to achieve various letter grades, based on your current grade and the exam weight. Calculated using the standard final exam formula:

Required Final Exam Score (Exam Weight: 30%)

Current Grade Need A (93%) Need B (83%) Need C (73%) Need D (63%)
95%86.7%53.4%20.0%0%*
90%103%**70.0%36.7%3.3%
85%119.7%**86.7%53.3%20.0%
80%Not possible103.3%**70.0%36.7%
75%Not possibleNot possible86.7%53.3%
70%Not possibleNot possible103.3%**70.0%

* Score of 0% or higher means you've already secured this grade regardless of exam score. ** Score above 100% means this grade is mathematically impossible given the exam weight.

Formula: Required Final Score = (Desired Grade - Current Grade × (1 - Exam Weight)) × Exam Weight. Example: Need 83%, currently at 80%, exam is 30% weight ? (0.83 - 0.80 × 0.70) × 0.30 = (0.83 - 0.56) × 0.30 = 90%.

? Frequently Asked Questions

What if I need over 100% on my final? +
If the calculator shows you need more than 100%, that target grade is mathematically impossible without extra credit. Your options: ask about extra credit, accept a lower target grade, or if you're close to 100%, try for a perfect score and hope it rounds up. Some professors also curve final exams.
How do I find out my current grade? +
Check your school's online portal (Canvas, Blackboard, etc.) for your current grade. If weights aren't clear, use our Current Grade tab to manually enter your assignments and their weights from your syllabus.
How much does the final usually count? +
Common final exam weights: 15-20% in many classes, 20-30% in math/science courses, 30-40% in some lecture courses, and up to 50% in graduate courses. Always check your syllabus for the exact weight.
Can I calculate with extra credit factored in? +
Yes! If you have extra credit, add those points to your current grade before using the calculator. For example, if you have 85% + 3% extra credit = 88% current grade. Enter 88 as your current grade.
What's a weighted vs unweighted grade? +
In a weighted system, different assignments count differently (e.g., tests worth 40%, homework worth 20%). Unweighted means all assignments count equally toward your average. Most college courses use weighted grading×check your syllabus.
